Survey for Recognition of Tissue Transplantation and Tissue Bank
Sim Sung-Bo

Abstract
Introduction: Practical systematization of tissue bank in Korea has only been around ten years in Korea. Despite its relatively short period, there have been active efforts as education and training of tissue bank experts; yet, systematic and constitutional investigation or experiment on physicians other than those who participate directly in tissue bank or general public still lacks. This investigation was carried out in efforts to acquire basic data on methods of activating the tissue bank through researching the level of comprehension on tissue bank and the level of recognition on donation/transplantation of human tissues in Korea.

Material and Method: From December 1, 2006 to May 31, 2007, for six months, the poll was researched anonymously by adults, and total of 405 have responded. The survey composed of three parts, 39 questions. Questions on the answerer¡¯s propensity such as personal information and history of blood/organ donation and on overall reaction to the tissue bank or his/her intention on transplantation of tissue or participation in tissue bank have been asked.

Results: Participants composed of 265 male and 140 female divided into three groups: Medical school students (n=133); tissue bank staffs (n=71); and public (n=201). Age group was all adults, 20~30 being the majority (89.6%). Religion was ordered as Christianity (33.4%), Catholic (20.7%), and Buddhism (12.6%). Cremation (68%) was the most preferred methods of funeral after one¡¯s own death, and to the question about intentions to donate organs or body after death or encephalography, 60.4% answered yes. 75.3% answered ¡°yes¡± to the question ¡°when transplanting tissue to a patient in medical agency, only the tissues provided from tissue bank (permitted by KFDA of Public Health Department) should be used according to the law.¡± 70.9% answered that social benefits on tissue donation should be prepared. ¡°TV and radio¡± (78.32%) was the mostly chosen public awareness methods.

Conclusion: Our nation¡¯s people appeared to have high recognition on tissue bank and tissue transplantation, to be positive, and to be perceptive of the fact that the majority of the tissues used in the country are being imported. Many wanted to be cremated after death and had intentions to donate tissue. Presently, they also were aware that tissue bank is under the administration of KFDA/Public Health Department and that national/regional tissue bank is absent. Religion affects donation culture and those people with the experience of blood donation were affirmative to tissue donation. Many said that in order for the tissue donation to be active, social benefits are needed. Combining the public awareness and organization of Tissue donation and Organ donation is thought to be helpful to activate donation culture.
Although many had relatively high understanding of tissue transplantation, awareness on tissue bank which practices such operation was still low that more active campaign should be needed.
